There is a lot going on in our world isn’t there?
Sometimes it’s hard to sustain our hope and sense of ‘okayness’. I was struck, as so many were, with the recent space mission and in particular with the sense of unity that they expressed when looking back to earth.
As they looked down on their home planet from that great distance, the astronauts got the unique opportunity to experience what has been dubbed the “overview effect”. Space philosopher Frank White coined the phrase in 1987, and astronauts for decades have described a similar feeling – the realisation that everyone back on Earth shares more in common than we realise. Borders and divisions aren’t visible from space.
As Victor Glover said, “”As we get close to the nearest point to the moon and farthest point from Earth, as we continue to unlock the mysteries of the cosmos, I would like to remind you of one of the most important mysteries there on Earth, and that’s love.
“Christ said, in response to what was the greatest command, that it was to love God with all you are,” said Glover. “And he also, being a great teacher, said the second is equal to it. And that is to love your neighbour as yourself.”
