A poem for St George's day

By Virginia Smith

Today, today’s St George’s Day
And all we English shout “Hooray”
A heroic saint who liked to ride
A trusty weapon by his side.
He always sought some maid to save
From some dragon’s dismal cave.
The dragon might breathe smoke and fire.
Which did no harm to G’s attire
Although at times it singed his hair
But our brave saint did not despair.
He knew his sword would do the trick,
And pierce that dragon to the quick.
And then gently take the maid on board
Having carefully sheathed his bloody sword
And off they’d ride with battle done,
And George would think his life was fun.
It’s all a myth some people claim,
But they’re just jealous of his fame!
