In memory of Sarah Lady Abinger younger daughter of George Smith Esqre of Ashtead in this County, Chief Justice of Mauritius widow of Robert Campbell 2nd Baron Abinger. Born October 13th 1803 died June 3rd 1878. She was buried in a vault in the NE angle of this churchyard. "At evening time it shall be light". Zech XIV 7

In memory of Robert Campbell 2nd Baron Abinger born Sep 5th 1794 died June 24th 1861 at Abinger Hall. This tablet was erected by his widow. Save us Oh God of our salvation and gather us together. 1 Chronicles 16 chap 35 verse IHS

To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of My Dear Husband Hebert William Carpenter 7th Queens Regiment Schoolmaster of Abinger Council School Who Gave his Life for his Country September 7th 1918, aged 33 years "He was Strong in Faith giving Glory to God" (Romans 4:20)

During whose time the church was restotred and much beautified This tablet is erected by his parishioners in token of their appreciation of his long and faithful ministry in their midst. "he being dead yet speaketh"

The lectern was dedicated in this church8 Oct 1899 to the Glory of God and the beloved memories of Florence Bayley and Walter Ker her only son who fell in action May 1897 aged 22. Given by her daughter and sisters AD 1899. "Thy word is lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path".

To the sacred memory of Flora Louise Lady Lugard DBE beloved wife of Frederick Dealtry Lord Lugard who died at Little Parkhurst January 25th 1929. "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you". And of Colonel the Right Honourable Frederick John Dealtry Baron Lugard GCMG CB DSO PC Hon DCL Oxford & Durham; Hon LLD Cambridge, Glasgow & Hong Kong; a Commander of the Legion of Honour; Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold II; Sometime Governor-General of Nigeria, who died at Little Parkhurst April 11th 1945 aged 87. Soldier, explorer, administrator. "All I did was to try and lay my bricks straight"

On north wall of north chapel. Born Reginald Popham Lobb. Private Secretary to Lord Lugard (his neigbour in Abinger) in Nigeria, retired as Colonial Secretary to Cyprus in 1929. In Loving memory of Reginald Popham Nicholson CMG CBE 1892 - 1950 And Mary Eleanor Nicholson 1892 - 1968 Of Tallboys, Abinger Hammer.

Robert Offley ¶

Under this stone is interred the Body of the Reverend Mr Robert Offley near fifty three years Rector of this Parish and oldest prebendary of the Cathedral Church of Durham greatly esteemed and beloved for his benevolent Charity and Hospitality. He exchanged this life for a better the 10th day of May 1743

JSW Powell¶

Sacred to the memory of The Rev JSW Powell for 27 years rector of this parish and Rural dean. resigned 1877 and died at Brighton February 25 1881. His remains lie in a valut in this churchyard. Them that sleep in Jesus will God bring with him - 1 Thess 4.14. This tablet is erected by his parishoners and friends who valued his faithful ministry. On west wall of north chapel. In affectionate remembrance of Emma, wife of Gilbert Redgrave She spent many happy hours in Abinger and died at Sydenham Jan 4th 1914 in the 64th year of her age.

Frances Margaret Redgrave ¶

In Affectionate Memory of Frances Margaret Redgrave Elder daughter of Richard Redgrave RA CB Born September 26th 1945 died March 7th 1932 And of Evelyn Leslie Redgrave younger sister of the above Born November 29th 1849 died March 23rd 1932 "They were lovely and pleasant in their lives and in their death they were not divided" (II Samuel 1.17,23,26).

Gilbert Bacon Redgrave ¶

Born 1884, buried in the churchyard. Family tree here. In Loving Memory of Gilbert Bacon Redgrave Major RAF Younger Son of GR Redgrave and Emma his Wife who died October 23rd 1924 Aged 40 "Thou hast made me glad through Thy works" (Psalm 92:4).

Richard Redgrave ¶

Richard Redgrave RA, HM Inspector-General of Art Schools, Surveyor of the Crown's Pictures. Declined a knighthood in 1869. Painted many local scenes. Buried in Brompton Cemetery, London.
To the dear memory of Richard Redgrave CB, RA born 30 April 1804 died 14 December 1888 who spent thirty-six summers looking through nature to nature's God. "Make him to be numbered with thy saints in glory everlasting" (Te Deum)

William Robinson¶

Sacred to the memory of Commodore William Robinson of the Bombay marines who in the year 1774 commanded a small squadron fitted out by the Bombay Government for the purpose of exploring the coast of the Indian Ocean from the mouth of the Indus to the Persian Gulph a survey which had not been attempted since a similar voyage was undertaken for the same purpose by Nearchus in the time of Alexander and to which Dr Vincent the learned translator of the voyage of Nearchus acknowledges himself to have been much indebted in the performance of that work. Having obtained an honourable independence in the service of the East India company he retired to Abinger Hall in this parish. He died in London March 1803 aged 57 years and is buried in a vault in this church. This simple tribute is offered to his memory by one of those who were indebted to the kindness of his disposition for many of the enjoyments of their childhood and is also intended to fulfill what would have been the wishes of others who can now no longer express them but who would have cordially joined in this record by their sense of his worth as a man and of his service as a friend.

Willm Hamilton Esq of Tottenham in the County of Middlesex husband of the above named Mary Hamilton died Sept 29 1800 aged 73 years.

James Henry Lawrence Scarlett¶

In memory of James Henry Lawrence Scarlett younger son of Lord Abinger born Janry 19 1830 died June 15th 1845. "I shall rise again".

James Scarlett 1769-1844 ¶

On north wall of north chapel. James Scarlett lived at Abinger Hall from 1810 (or 1814). See also family vault James Scarlett first Baron Abinger whose remains rest in a vault at the N.E. angle of this Churchyard. Born in Jamaica Dec 15. 1769. Died at Bury St Edmunds April 7. 1844. Lineally descended from an ancient family of English Gentry, James Scarlett was educated at Trinity College Cambridge and called to the Bar. In the honourable profession of the Law he deservedly gained the highest reputation and celebrity. He took office on two occasions as the Kings Attorney General; and in 1834 accepted the post of Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer and was raised to the Peerage. He died in in discharge of his duties whilst judge of Assize.

James York Scarlett 1799-1871¶

On north wall of north chapel. See also family vault. His life is in the Dict. of National Biography. See also Fortescue's Hist. of the British Army Vol XIII. General the Hon. Sir James Yorke Scarlett GCB. Born Feb 29.1799. Died Dec 6. 1871. He was the Second Son of James first Lord Abinger, entered the army a Cornet in the 18th Hussars AD 1819. Lt Col of the 5th D.Gds AD 1840. In command of the heavy Brigade of Cavalry in the Crimea AD 1854. On Oct 25th of the same year led into action that gallant force which gained a victory over the Light Russian Cavalry at Balaclava was wounded twice in the celebrated charge. On his return to England he was appointed Governor of Portsmouth and afterwards Adjutant General and to the command of HM Troops at Aldershot. He died at Bank Hall in Lancashire and was buried at Holme Chapel near Burnley in that Co.

Louise Henrietta Scarlett¶

To the beloved memory of Louise Henrietta wife of Sir James Scarlett knight of Abinger Hall in this parish daughter of Peter Campbell of Kilmory in Argyle Esqre. She departed this life on the 8th day of March AD 1829 in the 58th year of her age. Her remains are deposited in a vault in the north east angle of the churchyard. Her devotion as a wife her affection as a mother her unaffected piety and the rectitude of all her actions and sentiments live in the recollections of her husband her children and her friends.

In a vault underneath lye the body of Mr Johannes Worsfold of Folles Green in this parish who departed this life August ye 15th 1761 aged 41 year. Here also lyeth the body of Mrs Elizabeth Worsfold widow of the late Mr John Worsfold of the same place who departed this life April ye 8th 1763 aged 80 years. In the same vault also lies interred the body of Mr Richard Rowzier who departed this life the 9th day of May 1767 aged 22 years. Here also lyeth the body of Mrs Elizabeth Rowzier who departed this life June 17th 1785 aged 63 years.

Charitable donations and bequests to the poor.¶

Year 1613. Henry Spooner of Abinger yeoman by will dated the 5th day of January 1613 left the Poor of the Parishes of Abinger and Ockley one annuity or yearly rent of 20/- to be issued out of his tenemants and land in Abinger called Yard Land to be distributed yearly in equal proportions to the parishes of Abinger and Ockley on the Feast day of all saints. Annual interest 10/-.

The Poor of this Parish are entitled to a portion of Mr Smith's Charity the annual amount of which varies. It is due at Michelmas and is to be distributed according to the Trust deeds and Will in Clothes Bread and Flesh on Sundays.

1817 Dame Mary Evelyn bequeathed £500 to be laid out in the purchase of 3 per cent Bank Annuities. The interest to be distributed annually on Easter Sunday in Bread. One moiety to the Parish of Abinger the other to the parish of Wotton at the discretion of the Rectors. Total of 3 per cent stock purchased 598.16.6 annual interest £8.19.7. Trustees (1828) for Abinger: Rev H J Ridley AM, Rector; Edmund Lomax Esqre, Churchwarden, For Wotton: Hon & Rev J E Boscawen AM, Rector; Lee Steere Esqre, Churchwarden.

1828 The Rev J T Lawes AM formerly Rector of the Parish of Abinger left to John Evelyn Esqre his executors administrators and assigns £100 upon trust that he or they do invest the same in his or their own name or names in the public stocks or funds of Great Britain and upon trust that he or they do or shall once in every year for ever after his decease pay and apply the dividends and yearly proceeds there of unto such and so many of the poor industrious persons being Protestants and members of the Established Church resident in the parish of Abinger and at such manner as the said John Evelyn his executors &c with the assistance and advice of the Rectors of the said parish of Abinger for the time being shal think fit provided that the same be paid to such only of the said poor persons as shall not be receiving parochial allowance or in furnishing such comforts as cannot legally be supplied by the Parish officers. 1829 Rev H J Ridley AM Rector, Mrs Anne Evelyn relict of JNO Evelyn Esqre, Trustees; Mr William Baker, Mr Richard Johnson, Churchwardens.

Mr Lawes bequeathed the like sum of £100 for the same purposes after the decease of his widow.
